After speaking with Melty, Natsuki Subaru and Beatrice are ambushed in a hallway by "Black Dog" while en route to check on the resting Crusch Karsten. Subaru insists on keeping Beatrice with him to maintain their mana connection. Black Dog addresses their recent conversation with Melty ("White Sheep"), claiming he regards her merely as a pet he cannot help meddling with, though Subaru perceives a bond resembling family. Black Dog confirms that, like Melty, he lost both his name and memories to the Sin Archbishops of Gluttony. He reveals he intercepted a ciphered bird letter from Russell Fellow ("Silver Fox") proving Russell tightly controls information and cannot be trusted. Specifically, the letter reveals that Emilia escaped the royal castle alongside another princess, putting her entire camp on the wanted list. When Beatrice demands proof of his sincerity, Black Dog removes his mask, displaying rugged features, light brown wavy hair, and dark skin. To further prove his claims, Black Dog abruptly slams Subaru against the wall, prompting Beatrice to cast Murak. Black Dog cancels the spell by exposing an Evil Eye of "Magic Absorption" embedded in his right palm. Possessing an Evil Eye and golden eyes identical to Melty’s indicates he likely hails from the same homeland of Faradar. Black Dog explains he deliberately hid this matter from Melty. Through intercepted intel, he deduced that Faradar was seized to hold hostages against them, but after Gluttony erased their identities, the captors lost track of their purpose and destroyed the territory, leaving everyone presumed dead. Despite lacking memories of his past, Black Dog is consumed by a fierce desire for revenge against the perpetrator. He claims he conceals this from Melty so she will not steal his newfound reason for living, though Beatrice doubts his stated reasoning. Black Dog proposes confronting Russell while Crusch sleeps and other Six Tongues members are absent, though Subaru notes they must wait until Melty leaves Russell's presence. Subaru agrees to assist Black Dog within boundaries that do not compromise Emilia’s wishes, their goals, or their promise to Melty. Clenching his fist over his Evil Eye, Black Dog names his target for vengeance: Sakura Element.
