Filore, a Royal Selection candidate and Saintess of the Divine Dragon Church, proposes a plan to her knight, Heinkel: breaking candidates Emilia and Felt out of their confinement in the royal castle. Heinkel, the Deputy Commander of the Royal Guard, initially dismisses the idea as treasonous, crumpling the detailed map Filore compiled through espionage. However, moved by her unwavering resolve to stay true to her ideals even at the cost of her status and the Church's backing, Heinkel reluctantly agrees. He insists on a half-month preparation period to refine her flawed plan. Over the next half-month, Heinkel uses his knowledge of the castle's layout and guard rotations to design a viable escape route. He plans around the absence of his son, Reinhard, who is stationed at the capital’s outer perimeter because the Kingdom fears Felt’s influence over him. Meanwhile, Filore plays her part perfectly, continuing her futile daily petitions to avoid raising suspicion. On the day of the escape, they enter the castle under the pretext of delivering Filore's 150th petition. Slipping into the East Wing, Heinkel ambushes and knocks out the guards on duty, including his rival, Zeor Zandrick. They reach Felt’s room, and though she is surprised to see Heinkel, she readily agrees to the escape. When Felt asks about Reinhard, Heinkel confirms he was kept in the dark, which only fuels Felt's anger and determination to leave. With Felt in tow, they head to the upper floor to rescue Emilia from her magic-sealed room. However, they find the corridor unexpectedly abandoned. Suspecting a trap, Heinkel investigates, only for his sword to be pinned in its scabbard by an overwhelming force. The hand belongs to Marcos Gildark, Commander of the Royal Guard, who has come up behind him without a sound despite his bulk and heavy armor—and who asks whether Heinkel understands what he is doing.
