Subaru, carrying the unconscious Crusch, and Beatrice face a massive wall of fire unleashed in the sewers by a clown-masked man known as "Black Dog." While their companion Rachins dives into the sewage to escape, Subaru stands his ground, correctly gambling that the attacker will not incinerate Crusch. The flames vanish, and Black Dog taunts Subaru, revealing that the Royal Capital is in a panic over rumors that Subaru is actually the Sin Archbishop of Sloth. Black Dog's "Conversation Mirror" activates, and he hands it to Beatrice. A girl named "White Sheep" appears on the mirror, apologizing for Black Dog. She explains that they need Crusch's "Divine Protection of the Wind Reading" to fight the "Beloved Child," a group pulling the strings behind the capital's crisis. Suddenly, a woman named Clarissa, a "Beloved Child" and "abnormality user," appears and shatters a pebble, causing the sewer walls and ceiling to rapidly crack like glass and collapse. Beatrice uses her limited mana to cast *Murak*, lessening the debris' weight to protect them. To counter Clarissa's next devastating attack, Rachins pulls a sewer chain to release highly flammable gas from a sedimentation tank. Black Dog shoves Subaru, Beatrice, and Crusch into the water, enclosing them in a protective earthen ball. Subaru pulls Rachins inside just before the sphere seals. Rachins ignites the gas with magic, causing a massive explosion that knocks Subaru unconscious. Subaru wakes up in a safehouse clinic with Beatrice. Crusch is still unconscious but safe, and Rachins is asleep. They are greeted by White Sheep and Russell Fellow, the representative of the Commerce Guild. Russell reveals that the Kingdom is on the brink of destruction because its heart has fallen to a long-standing nemesis, and he requests Subaru's help to resolve the crisis.
