Subaru, carrying Beatrice, navigates the capital's sewers after escaping pursuing Kingdom soldiers with the help of a sudden earthquake. Beatrice heals a burn on Subaru’s arm, though both are nearly depleted of mana. Crusch Karsten, wearing an eyepatch, accompanies them. Subaru reflects on his desire to understand why Crusch recently dismissed Ferris. When questioned about her actions, Crusch reveals she had sought help from Miklotov McMahon. However, using her Divine Protection of the Wind Reading, she sensed a "suspicious wind" concerning Miklotov and an expected guest. When she investigated, Miklotov's household opposed her, leading to her cutting them down. Observing Crusch's reliance on unshareable information, Subaru recognizes his own past desperation and resolves to either support or stop her rather than abandon her. Crusch detects a presence, and Rachins of Felt’s camp emerges from the dark. Rachins is revealed to be the son of Rickert Hoffman, a former Royal Instructor. He delivers devastating news: both Emilia and Felt have been detained at the Royal Castle, Reinhard has been restricted from moving, and the rest of the Emilia camp has fled as wanted fugitives. Rachins explains they are being framed by an unknown force aiming to disrupt the Royal Selection. Subaru suspects the "Divine Dragon Church" is behind this plot. Suddenly, Crusch passes out from the strain of her left "Dragon Eye." As Subaru carries her, intending to seek safety with Rachins, a tall man in black robes and a white jester mask confronts them. The masked man declares he only has business with the sleeping Crusch, tells the others to die, and unleashes a massive, hot wave of flames at them.
