Subaru Natsuki and his contracted spirit, Beatrice, prepare to join an expedition to the Water Gate City of Pristella to witness the healing of the Witch Cult's victims. Traveling via Reinhard van Astrea, the group includes Emilia, Garfiel, Otto, Felt, the star of the expedition Fiore, and her overseer Sakura. While discussing Otto's plan to retrieve Echidna's partially burnt Book of Wisdom from a Pristella restorer, Beatrice feels complicated about her own destroyed book but reaffirms her bond with Subaru. Subaru and Beatrice also discuss the political mystery of Felt and Fiore—where one is rumored to be the real surviving Lugunican princess and the other a fake—and question why the Divine Dragon Church, which raised Fiore, did not use her healing miracles to save the deceased Royal Family. Before departing, Subaru heads to a private appointment with Miklotov McMahon, a leader of the Council of Sages who previously showed Subaru kindness. On his way with Beatrice, Subaru runs into his friend Tiga, who was also secretly summoned by Miklotov to consult on something he is seeking. Upon arriving at Miklotov's mansion, Tiga detects the scent of blood. Armed with Beatrice and his Guiltywhip, and accompanied by Tiga wielding a shamshir, Subaru enters to find a fresh massacre. Over ten household members have been cleanly slain with single, painless strokes. Drawing on his traumatic memories of the carnage on Gladiator Island, Subaru recognizes that the victims died very recently. Hoping to find survivors, they push forward to the mansion's main room. Inside, they discover the slashed flag of Lugunica and the freshly slain corpse of Miklotov. Standing over the body is the perpetrator: Crusch Karsten, wearing an eyepatch and holding a clean, wind-cutting sword. Crusch turns to the stunned group and asks Subaru if he is the "Real" one she knows, leaving him in a state of shock.
